The Brits 2023 is officially done for another year, and it was Harry Styles’s night. As predicted, the “As It Was” singer took home artist of the year, song of the year, best pop / r&b, and album of the year marking the start of a very good 2023 for the former One Directioner, having won the best album award at the Grammys just last week. Wet Leg and Beyoncé both won two Brits, while The 1975, Aitch, and Becky Hill also scooped the top prizes.

Vick Hope and Jack Saunders announced the nominations on 12 Jan., but the lists were shrouded in controversy. Fans were quick to take to social media to criticise the awards show for the male-dominated categories, with no women up for the artist of the year award. The Brits opted for gender-neutral categories in 2022, but this step forward for inclusivity has seemingly left women omitted. “Thank you to the @BRITs for literally showing everyone that ‘gender neutral’ literally means exclusion of women, well done,” one Twitter user posted. There was also dismay at the pop and R&B category. Singer Mahalia tweeted, “Forget putting us in this category. Give us our own!!!!! How many times do we have to scream at you?” Others were disappointed to see no females nominated in the Grime category.

After a night of top performaces, see all the 2023 Brits winners ahead.
