The nominations for the 2023 TV BAFTAs have been announced, and it’s set to be one hell of a night. BBC’s “This Is Going to Hurt”, starring Ben Whishaw, and BBC’s “The Responder”, starring Martin Freeman, top the board with six nods each. Netflix’s “The Crown” has bagged five nominations, and Channel 4’s “Derry Girls” is in the running for the Scripted comedy and Female performance in a comedy programme, thanks to Siobhán McSweeney’s star turn as Sister Michael. Costar Nicola Coughlan jumped on Facetime with her two “best friends” McSweeney and Jack Rooke to celebrate their nominations straight after the list was released.

But there were some snubs among the list. Despite the third series of “Happy Valley” praised for the incredible acting by stars Sarah Lancashire and James Norton, the BBC show did not find itself on the list of nominees. “Where’s ‘Happy Valley’ in this?”, one fan asked on Twitter, while another questioned: “Did no one on the bafta committee watch Happy Valley???? What even???” However, BAFTA’s official Twitter responded to the complaints, informing fans that the series was not eligible for this year’s awards after the third series was released on 1 Jan., and is likely to be nominated for the 2024 BAFTAs instead. “Peaky Blinders” also missed out on the drama series category. Last year’s TV BAFTAs shocked fans as “It’s a Sin” failed to win, despite being nominated for six awards, so questions have remained around outdated attitudes and the weight of awards recognition.

The film BAFTAs, the sister to the TV award show, took place in Feb., and while the night saw Austin Butler and Cate Blanchett recognised, the awarding body was criticised for not one person of colour winning any category throughout the whole evening.

The TV BAFTAs will be hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan and will be broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer on Sunday, 14 May at 7pm. See all the 2023 TV BAFTA nominations ahead.
